Just like bedding, sleeping bags need to be washed regularly to rid them of dirt and body oils to keep them clean and fresh and help them last longer.

John Dorn, Editor-in-Chief of Backpacker Magazine, recommends washing your sleeping bag in a laundromat with commercial front-load washers.  He also suggests turning the sleeping bag inside out and using a special detergent designed for optimal sleeping bag cleaning.

For drying, he suggests that sleeping bags be line dried or tumble dried on a low-heat or no-heat setting.
