You may spend hours choosing the perfect swimsuit, yet it can take only one wash to ruin it. Here are some tips to gently launder your swimsuit and make it last for more than one summer.
Use a mild
laundry detergent designed for hand washable items. Although they cost a little more, a liquid detergent will provide a more thorough cleaning. Mild detergents are also available for high efficiency washing machines like those at the Washouse. Look for a detergent that does not contain bleach or fabric softener to prevent fading of your swimsuit. Those used for washing baby clothes are ideal. Organic fragrance-free and hypoallergenic detergents are another safe option for swimsuits.
Repair any damaged areas of the swimsuit before laundering. Washing the swimsuit may cause any holes or tears to increase if you wash before repairing.
Spot treat stains before washing. Allow the stain treatment to sit on the swimsuit for 10 minutes before washing.
Place the swimsuit inside a mesh bag designed for laundering delicate items. If you do not have one, a pillow case can be used instead. Tie the end of the pillow case to make sure the swimsuit stays inside.
Use a short or delicate cycle. Select cold water and light-soil or low-water-level settings.
Once the cycle is complete, place the swimsuit on a towel and allow to dry flat or hang dry.
